Academics

The curriculum at Union Day School is rigorous, engaging, and delivered by skilled teachers in supportive classroom environments.

UDS K-5 students receive instruction in 

  • Singapore Math®, 

  • Balanced literacy approach through Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, 

  • Handwriting Without Tears® - comprehensive and multi-sensory handwriting and cursive instruction 

  • Inquiry-based science, 

  • Phonics Instruction (K-2 grade)

  • Spanish, Music, Art, and Physical Education beginning in kindergarten

UDS 6-12 grade curriculum:

Since the 2019-20 academic year, Union Day School has been the only area school to offer the International Baccalaureate® (IB) program to all students beginning in sixth grade.  Learn more about how the IB gives students distinct advantages, by building their critical thinking skills, nurturing their curiosity and their ability to solve complex problems.

Kindergarten - Grade 2

•    Singapore Math®

•    Kindergarten - full time TA in every class
•    1st-2nd grade - floater TA to provide for small group/individualized instruction

Middle School Grades 6 - 8

Union Day School is a Candidate School* for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)®. UDS is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that UDS believes is important for our students.


*- Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Union Day School's high school is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, providing students with a rigorous, globally recognized curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and a well-rounded education. In addition to the IB program, students have the opportunity to participate in North Carolina's dual enrollment program, allowing them to earn college credits while still in high school. This combination ensures that our students are not only well-prepared for higher education but also equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a globalized world. By integrating these programs, Union Day School is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and preparing students for a bright future.
